There is no minimum student enrollment per grade level, though a cohort of 5-15 students is recommended. A maximum enrollment to include no more than 10% of total grade-level enrollment is suggested. Therefore, the IASA educators developed multiple math and science units (The Mitchell Excellence Curriculum) specifically designed for implementation in the middle-school grades in rural communities in Israel. The goal was to provide opportunities that would level the playing field between large urban communities and rural communities that typically had fewer resources. As depicted in Table 2, the curriculum units cover a wide range of themes in science and mathematics. Although developed for use in Israel, many units were translated into English.
