For years, he was considered primarily a generous patron of impressionists, but not as a painter in his own right. Later, his style was seen to be more realistic than those of his friends Degas, Monet and Renoir. In 1874, he helped to organise the First Impressionist Exhibition. However, he did not include his own work – he would show in later impressionist exhibitions. However, he did not include his own work – he would show in later impressionist exhibitions. In this typical work he captures the feeling of a new Parisian boulevard in an area of the Batignolles quarter on a rainy day. The realism with which Caillebotte depicts the scene is later praised by the writer Emile Zola: "Paris Street, Rainy Day displays strollers and, in particular, a man and a woman in the foreground, of a beautiful realism. When his talent will have softened a little, Caillebotte will certainly be the most audacious of the group."
Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894) is one of the most important figures of French Impressionism. He was not only a very passionate painter who created about 500 paintings, but also supported his contemporary fellow artists as a collector, patron, and initiator by funding and organising exhibitions. Nevertheless, he remains one of the less publicised Impressionist painters.
In contrast to the other French Impressionists Caillebotte painted more realistically and was one of the first artists inspired by photography. However, Caillebotte knew how to combine his painting technique which appeared partially photorealistic with the influence of the new movement in harmony. Unlike his Impressionist contemporaries who took their easels outside to present in a spontaneous manner their landscapes and scenes of everyday life, Caillebotte initially made many drawings and oil sketches, which he then later used as models for his paintings in his studio.
Caillebotte’s talent was misjudged for a long time. The very realistic-looking painting The Floor Scrapers from 1875, which was rejected by the Salon in Paris due to its topic which was too everyday and found its place later in the Mus&233;e d’Orsay, is today considered one of his most important oil paintings. At the same time the rejection of the painting was a crucial point that caused Caillebotte to initiate his own exhibitions, independent of the conventional Salon. Thorough documentary reproduction of the floor scrapers and their gestures and tools justify regarding him as one of the most accomplished Realists of his time. Since he did not have to depend on selling his pictures for a living, the painter was able to determine the motifs of his works himself.
